About University of Udine
Founded in 1978, the University of Udine is a relatively young but well-established public research university situated in the historic city of Udine, in Italy's northeastern Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It was created in the aftermath of the devastating 1976 earthquake that struck the region, conceived as a way to support the area's cultural and economic recovery. The university is organized into multiple departments covering fields such as agricultural and environmental sciences, economics, law, medicine, engineering, humanities, languages, and education. It maintains a strong regional identity while fostering international collaborations through Erasmus+ and other exchange programs. The university is particularly known for its research in agri-food sciences, viticulture and enology (reflecting the region's winemaking heritage), engineering, and medicine. With a moderate student population, it offers a more intimate academic environment compared to Italy's larger metropolitan universities, while still maintaining strong ties with regional industry and cross-border cooperation with Austria and Slovenia given its proximity to both.

Student Life at University of Udine
Student Life

A close-knit, mid-sized university town experience. Udine is compact and affordable compared to Italy's larger cities, with strong regional identity, an emphasis on agri-food and wine culture, and active Erasmus/exchange participation. Facilities include research labs, computer labs, and multiple libraries; the social scene is more low-key and community-oriented than in Rome.
