SISSA International school for advanced studies

Founded in 1978 in Trieste, SISSA is one of Italy's most prestigious research institutions, modeled loosely on other elite international graduate schools. Unlike traditional universities, SISSA does not offer undergraduate degrees; instead, it focuses exclusively on doctoral (PhD) training and advanced research in three core areas: physics, mathematics, and neuroscience. The school operates with an intensely research-driven approach, small cohorts, and close mentorship between students and internationally recognized faculty. SISSA has produced significant contributions in theoretical physics, mathematical physics, condensed matter theory, cognitive neuroscience, and computational neuroscience, among other fields.
