About Sapienza University of Rome
Founded by Pope Boniface VIII in 1303, Sapienza University of Rome (Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza") is one of the oldest universities in the world and the largest in Europe by enrollment, with well over 100,000 students. The name "Sapienza" means "wisdom" in Italian. The university is organized into 11 faculties covering nearly every academic discipline, including medicine, law, engineering, humanities, economics, political science, architecture, and the sciences. Its main campus, known as the Città Universitaria, was built in the 1930s and is considered an important example of Italian rationalist architecture. Sapienza has a long list of notable alumni and faculty, including several Nobel laureates, and it plays a central role in Italian intellectual and cultural life given its location in the capital. The university is heavily involved in research across virtually all fields and is a major hub for both national and international academic collaboration, consistently ranking as one of the top universities in Italy and among the leading institutions in Europe and the world in various global rankings.
