About Roma Tre University
Founded in 1992, Roma Tre University (Università degli Studi Roma Tre) is the third public university established in Rome, created to further expand higher education access in the city following the founding of Tor Vergata a decade earlier. Rather than building a single large suburban campus, Roma Tre integrated its various departments into repurposed historic and industrial buildings throughout the Ostiense and Garbatella districts of Rome, giving it a distinctive urban character interwoven with the city rather than separated from it. The university offers programs across a dozen departments, with particularly strong reputations in law, political science, humanities, philosophy, architecture, economics, and engineering. It has cultivated a reputation for being a dynamic, student-centered institution with a relatively younger academic culture compared to Sapienza, while still maintaining rigorous academic standards. Roma Tre places emphasis on research in the humanities and social sciences, along with growing engineering and science programs, and it actively participates in international exchange and research networks, reflecting Rome's broader academic landscape as a city offering multiple distinct university options with different institutional identities.

Student Life at Roma Tre University
Student Life

Rome's youngest public university (founded 1992), with a distinctly urban, "woven into the city" character rather than a self-contained campus. Its buildings are spread through the Ostiense district near the Tiber, giving students an integrated city-living experience with easy access to Rome's center. The student culture is often described as younger and more dynamic than Sapienza's, with strong programs in law, political science, humanities, and architecture, and growing engineering/science offerings. |
