About University of Tuscia

Established in 1979, the University of Tuscia is based in Viterbo, the largest medieval town center in Europe and once a seat of the papacy. Though a young institution, UNITUS has built a strong regional and academic identity, organized into six departments spanning legal and social sciences, humanities and languages, economics and engineering, ecology and biology, and agricultural and forestry sciences, with additional campuses in nearby Civitavecchia and Rieti. The university has developed a particular reputation in agriculture, sustainability, ecological transition, and renewable energy, and several of its departments have been recognized as "Departments of Excellence" by Italy's Ministry of Education. It offers around 40 undergraduate and graduate programs and several English-taught international master's programs, along with 7 PhD tracks. Despite its smaller scale compared to Rome's universities, UNITUS consistently reports strong student satisfaction, a favorable staff-to-student ratio, and solid graduate employment outcomes, positioning it as one of Italy's better-regarded "young universities."

Student Life at University of Tuscia
Student Life

Student life at UNITUS has an intimate, small-town character quite different from Italy's big-city universities. With around 8,000–10,000 students spread across a historic campus built partly within a former monastic complex, students benefit from close relationships with faculty, personalized academic support, and easy access to campus services through a dedicated welcome office and international helpdesk. Viterbo itself offers a relaxed, low-cost, and safe environment with a well-preserved medieval old town, thermal springs nearby, and easy transport connections to Rome for weekend trips. Sports facilities, student associations, and cultural activities give the university a genuine community feel, appealing to students who want a quieter, more personal alternative to the intensity of studying in a major metropolis.
